Project Overview

Despite the challenge of a complex project with multiple, overlapping activities in a confined space and on an extremely tight schedule, GROUP Contractors was able to deliver this shredder dock facility to EMR-Southern Recycling in New Orleans 26 days early, saving the owner $260,000 in operating costs.

The 984-ft-long by 30-ft-wide pile-supported, precast concrete dock was designed to allow scrap metal to be offloaded directly from barges on the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO) into a new, large metal shredder and then directly back onto the barges from the discharge conveyor. Even with a number of setbacks, including working around the operating shredder, GROUP was able to put together the dock foundation like a jigsaw puzzle with less than a 2-inch tolerance for each of the 50 pilings. GROUP Contractors was awarded an early completion bonus and two new project contracts for their precise and timely work.
